Cough is associated with respiratory tract infection caused by a virus. This includes: upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), which affect the throat, windpipe or sinuses – such as the common cold, influenza (flu), laryngitis, sinusitis or whooping cough ; lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs), which affect lungs or lower airways – such as acute bronchitis and pneumonia (although this is rare). Possible non-infectious causes of an acute cough include: allergic rhinitis, such as hay fever, chronic condition such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or chronic bronchitis.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Tulsi and Adhatoda vasica jointly mediates effective Antitussive effects. In clicnial study involving oral administration of Adhatoda vasica it showed showed antitussive activity similar to codeine against coughing induced by irritant aerosols (1). Glycyrrhiza glabra( Yashtimadhu) provides soothening and relaxing effect along with its anti-inflammatory activity. The inflammatory events in the lung were associated with the activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) and signal transducer and activator transcription-3 (STAT-3) activation in the lung. NF-kappaB and STAT-3 activation were significantly reduced by glycyrrhizin treatment in clinical study (2). Zingiber officinale( Soonth) influences both cell-mediated immune response and nonspecific proliferation of T lymphocyte, and exert beneficial effects in a number of clinical conditions, such as chronic inflammation and autoimmune
diseases (3). Clerodendron serratum (Bharangi) posses Anti-inflammatory and Anti-pyretic activity. The results support the traditional claims of C. serratum as a remedy for pain, inflammation and fever (4).
